Borwickfishing started as a 30 acre gravel pit excavated to provide material for the construction of the M6. It was left derelict for almost half a century with few activities other than  grazing sheep and a little wildfowl shooting. However during this time, despite the lack of much biodiversity, the lake became an important over-wintering site for wildfowl like many other flooded workings in the area. The site was accordingly identified as a Biological Heritage Site, which is one tier below a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Development was carefully planned to preserve the three important wildlife features – over-wintering wildfowl, breeding Tufted Ducks and Lapwings on the adjoining meadow. Frogs and Common Newts have been introduced.

The site is now visited by Swans, Oyster Catchers, Greylag Geese, Little Ringed Plover, Mallard, Great Crested Grebes, Buzzards, Curlews, Black-Headed Gulls and many more. Butterflies include Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Green Veined White, Small Tortoiseshell, Painted Lady and Comma.
