Borwickfishing started as a 30 acre gravel pit excavated to provide
material for the construction of the M6. It became a large irregular shape as
it flooded. It was left undeveloped for many year and only held a few fish
species and these were devastated by Cormorants so that only the largest
survived. Small numbers of Carp, Pike and Tench grew very large - Carp and
Pike around 30lb, Tench into double figures. Around the start of the decade, British Waterways became
interested in developing the site as a fishing and visitor centre.
Environmental considerations meant that there were strict planning guidelines
so it was agreed to divide up the lake and keep the main area as natural as
possible. 5 pools were separated from the main lake by building causeways
across the bays and obtain spoil for this created another 3 pools to give 9
waters in total. Shallow wildlife pools were also dug around the northern
boundary. These new pools were stocked with £30,000 of fish. Unfortunately
British Waterways abandoned the site and many of these fish were lost to
Cormorants. Since then the original owner has restocked, controlled the
cormorants and completed abandoned works to provide excellent fishing and
facilities today.
